Since 1987, he has been member of Database Systems Group in the computer science department at the University of Wisconsin as well as being a co-founder of the University of Wisconsin's Data Mining Institute.

Aside from his academic endeavors, Raghu Ramakrishnan also founded the company QUIQ in 1999. This gave him the ability to put his vast knowledge of the database management system to work in the private sector. With his specialties being software for data retrieval from storage, database integration, development analysis and the application of data mining, QUIQ created new customer support and knowledge management systems for clients like Compaq, Sun Microsystems, as well as a host of other well-known tech companies.

In regards to Database Management Systems Raghu Ramakrishnan has certainly been a leader of that industry in the private sector. With over ten prestigious awards, a widely used database textbook to his name, as well as chairing The Board of Data Management, being a trustee of an endowment organization as well as being editor in chief of The Journal of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery and an associate editor of ACM Transactions on Database Systems, there are few that are as involved in the database industry as Ramakrishnan.
